“They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time.”
I just realized that Lemmy instances are similar. For example, feddit.ch shut down last month, but some posts live on as they were federated with other instances. The original instance won’t be entirely gone until (unless?) every instance that it was ever federated with is also gone.
iusearchlinux.fyi gone too. I’m glad feddit.ch at least announced this.
I don’t understand how they didn’t use .btw instead of .fyi for that instance.
No sure if this is a serious question, but .btw is not a TLD while .fyi is.

You can if you want to support the hosting of the requisite infrastructure https://newgtlds.icann.org/en/applicants/global-support/faqs/faqs-en
The TLD TL;DR is basically that domains don’t come out of nowhere. Just like how you need a lemmy.zip domain to be able to have the subdomains next.lemmy.zip or old.lemmy.zip, in order to have the domain lemmy.zip you must first have someone to run the .zip top-level domain (in this case, Google)
Like Forester mentioned in the other comment, you can have any combination of letters you want as a TLD, you just have to set up and manage all the infra for it (or find somebody else to do it for you)
And that’s why it is recommended to use instances where they have a Matrix or a Mastodon channel so that you can communicate outside of Lemmy

I just now noticed it was gone. Did it just vanish one day, or did its users at least have some hint?
edit: looks like it was a surprise: https://lemmyverse.link/mander.xyz/post/12163154

This theme seem to be ongoing throughout literature and art, from Hemingway / Banksy to the great…
GNU Terry Pratchett
Sekiro fediverse?
Real ones remember vlemmy.net. One of the first instances post-Reddit migration to go away suddenly
You can’t hang onto the past forever. It’s future time.
Heck yeah I’m ready

I hope that Lemmy server open source software allows extensions or plugins that enable those that run instances to have the option to automatically and continually back them up to the permaweb blockchain Arweave. What do you think about that?
Does Lemmy instance server software already allow for plugins or extensions to be utilized in a rather frictionless or efficient way?
Limitless peace

Issue tracking for plugins/extensions, if you click subscribe on the issue then you’ll get email updates for it https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3562
Have you thought about finding a way to make that happen yourself?
Yes i have. I might even have a plan
I still see some people posting to their local versions of the Lemmy.film communities
(!movies@lemm.ee for movie and TV shows discussions BTW)
What happens when someone posts to a local version of a community whose home instance no longer exists? I assume local users can see the post, but it doesn’t federate to any other instances?
I feel as though federated communities should automatically lock if the home instance closes down. Otherwise, users on other instances can continue posting with no knowledge that their posts aren’t being federated.

Correct
Agree with your other point too
That just sounds like forums. Sounds kind of nice
I have to wonder about the instance I am on regarding this.
But also, is that quote from Coco? I’ve watched that with my niece a lot but never all the way thru. Seems like something that would have been said in the underworld or whatever.
I’ve seen various versions attributed to Irving Yalom, Banksy, and others.
Ooh some good new people to look in to, thanks! Never heard if Yalom, only know Banksy for art.
