Does this AI work with real time info?
I don’t mind. I understand the enthusiasm since i switched recently (again) too.
As for windows; i think one of the main reasons people switch has to do with how bad windows has become. It’s bloated, it feels like everything is spied on, and in 11 they add AI and not to be helpful to their customers. So, a lot of people will say: hey, i switched to linux and finally, i’m rid of that evil windows. Many people might not know that much about linux just yet, so they are maybe - i’m speculating here - moving away from something unpleasant, rather than switching to linux because of the many advantages.
As for the linux 4 noobs community, i joined but it feels pretty dead and so, i ask my noob questions (apart from trying to do my own research) here, rather than over there. Are you implying that noobs are not really welcome to ask their questions here? It would be fine with me if the noob community was filled with people who are enthusiastically asking questions, but the most recent posts are a month old, so not very inviting.
I’ve had it happen that i joined a community and commented in some interesting thread and only then noticed that it was 3 or even 6 months old
Exactly; if Usually, it takes years, if not decades, before laws and regulations are actually in place
And now for 50 years worth of security updates for a phone like that. Not to mention what people might do with throwing a phone in the trash or something
That’s unfortunate! I never had it crash and i use it a lot
I use https://chat.petals.dev/ I think that is also open source
Yes, i made four, because when i joined Lemmy, everyone seemed to urge new users to spread across the fediverse. So, i did. But over time, i did away with two accounts and am contemplating ditching another one.
I prefer an elaborate description, if appropriate presuming people don’t know much about the topic yet. Bonus points for adding wikis (i don’t think it’s possible in Lemmy for now?) and links. And a friendly tone. Those concise oneliners, to me, feel like; if you don’t understand what this community is for, you are not welcome here anyway.
Advertisements can be blocked or allowed. But my issue is with the secret tracking that goes on on most websites i encounter. I am willing to support good journalism, but i’m not willing to have my privacy invaded. Unfortunately, it is hard to separate them, because am i donating for good journalism, but also encouraging the tracking? When i donate, will they stop tracking me? Probably not.
You pay for the companies providing the services to get you access to the internet, but you don’t pay for the content of the internet.
I noticed that many people commented that there should be more engagement, ‘just like reddit’. So, i’m wondering if some of these people left and will return later to see if it’s more ‘reddit like’. So, those might be people who don’t necessarily want to post and comment themselves, but are waiting until they can get served with an endless stream of posts to scroll through.
Just thinking out loud here.
Thanks for sharing. If you see that list of type of jobs at the end, it’s easy to see which jobs could get replaced within a reasonably short amount of time. Greed will always find a way to profit from whatever development arises. If they have 1 mountain of gold, they want 2 mountains of gold.
I heard about their plans maybe a month ago and i deleted all my stuff there and left youtube forever. I also already had deleted my gmail before that. I now use freetube on my pc and libretube on my phone.
It’s tiring to have to take measures to make sure you can use the internet as it used to be, though. I feel like i have a digital armor with ghostery, encrypted email, foss software, etc, etc…
Yup, i’ve sent this link before:

For me that was reason enough to not use them anymore, but for a long time, i almost exclusively used it.
Though i agree with you, i never feel like ‘i’m only one person’. For instance, if someone turns off the lights and recycles their trash, they often say; how does it help, i’m only one person after all. But there are so many people thinking the exact same thing and together we can help change the world.
So, yes, companies should be changed and i think this is also about politics and economics, which are usually conservative and greedy. But i never feel like the things i do are in vain; i’m standing with perhaps millions of invisible people who care about the environment and try to do their best and who all might be thinking; i’m only one person. Many people do want to change and try their best, but it’s time that all these conglomerates are being forced to change for real, instead of getting subsidized, and just greenwash their products.
I’m not saying consumers are not to blame, but i have objections against the phrasing; as if it’s primarily blaming consumers. I myself am not quite a minimalist, but do have strong tendencies in that direction. So, i never cared about fashion, or buying the newest gadgets. And i know there are people who are the complete opposite. However, i do feel that companies fuel the greed of consumers big time.
While consumers need to educate themselves/be educated by their caretakers and schools, i feel the heart of the matter is the marketing culture and the tendency of companies of hiding shady practices, like profiting from child slaves who have to mine precious metals, or women slaving away in factories for long hours, while risking their lives and bodies due to unsafe machinery, buildings and being bullied by their employees employers, for a shamefully low salary.
Edit to replace the word employees
Yes, because who wouldn’t want to live for centuries amidst floods, fire, raging mad politicians and greedy billionaires…
