It would be amazing if it could have a significant impact on spatial and temporal accuracy of things like rain. I feel like for me the existing weather report is good enough for “it will probably rain tomorrow” but it’s really hit-or-miss when you get to hourly resolution. A good model may be able to go so far as to say “it will probably rain between 3-4pm on the east side of town tomorrow, and 2-3pm on the west side”

That’s the dream at least. With enough data and a sophisticated enough model it feels like it could be possible.

There’s a difference between the real-ish-time weather data continuously fed in to output predictions, and the decades of weather data used to build the model. The continuous feed of data is more than likely part of what Google alleges is saving significant energy.

Its the training on decades of information, and occasional updates to those trained models that take a significant amount of resources, but hopefully for relatively short bursts.

I feel this personally, I live in the hills outside of a valley metro. All weather data is forecasted off of valley sensors, but shit gets weird when you suddenly climb 2000+ ft.

The best weather services in my area are those that can factor in peoples household meters into their forecasting, but those services still aren’t perfect.

It’s not just about cutting costs, but also improving accuracy. Physical simulations factor in a dozen or so weather conditions to predict outcomes. Machine learning can track thousands of conditions, drawing connections not realized in physical models, leading to much more accurate statistical models.

What they leave off is how much goes into training the model, but I imagine once they settle on a trained model it can carry on pretty efficiently for a long time, especially if they’re baking in things like atmospheric CO2 levels to help keep forecasts in line with global warming.

Businesses make decisions based on money. People make decisions based on vibes.

This is an ego fluffer app, not a scientific study. The accuracy is “good enough” to give you a rough idea of your performance, and if youre really into optimizing WPM, give you a way to track progress or the impacts of using different keyboards.

Getting a high score doesn’t actually mean anything except you probably use your phone too much.

How’s about a patent that expires 5 years after its first use by a billion+ dollar company? 5 years after it is used in more than 10,000 products? 5 years after its licensing has yielded over $1M in profit? 5 years after spending over $100k on advertising? 5 years after your first major court settlement?

I think there are ways to protect individual innovators but also lessen patent abuse

All of the banks I’ve used in the past utilize email or SMS for 2FA, which isn’t the most secure, but doesn’t require an app.

Sure, there are risks, but if the alternatives are pony up $100k for a new exosuit, or just don’t fucking walk again, I see why repair is an enticing option.

I’ve started choosing the companies I use based much more on the experience offered when their product/service DOESN’T work, rather than when it does.

Easy to do for a cell phone or a toaster, but I can’t imagine there’s a ton of options for exosuits that correct your condition, covered by your insurance, that your doctor is familiar enough with to prescribe (for lack of a better term).

Some things are annoying to make abandonware, and some things should be criminal.

If these companies are marketing their AI as being able to provide “answers” to your questions they should be liable for any libel they produce.

If they market it as “come have our letter generator give you statistically associated collections of letters to your prompt” then I guess they’re in the clear.

The problem is these AI companies currently exist on the business model of not paying for information, and that generally includes not wanting to pay content curators.

Google is probably the only one in a position to potentially outsource by making everyone solve a “does this hand look normal to you” CAPTCHA

They can try and train AI to detect AI, but that’s also difficult.
