Nerds don’t just want to teach people to swim. They want to teach them about hydrogen bonds and the mineral contents of the water, the processes of water treatment, and the technical requirements for a functional pool.

And I think that’s beautiful. There is nothing like watching someone explain something they’re passionate about.

The Linux part was never a problem. The userspace is.

For the proper opensource apps, this can be fixed by the package maintainers (shout-out to the real heroes!).

For proprietary, compile-once run anywhere apps, that was always a problem. For more info, I recommend this great FOSDEM talk by Simon McVittie from Collabora.

Reminds me of chakra linux. Same principals, except built on top of Arch base, and the other toolkit apps were distributed as self contained image files.

I’ve been using LawnChair, and they’ve dropped the feature for some time. I think it was being re-written from scratch. It just got back in the last month or so.

People tried to bring more content through bridges. Mastodonians promptly started crying about how it literally puts peoples lifes in danger. Some still have #nobridge tags in their profiles to this day, thinking it matters somehow in an open network.

Yes. Jellyfin will index the media files and push all the metadata along with the file paths on the network share they both can see to the local kodi database. That way browsing the library on kodi does not suffer any additional latency, but you also lose some advanced jellyfin functionality like on the fly re-encoding.

That’s strange. I’m using the old Jellyfin addon (not the JellyCon), and so far only encountered one bug in total, which, if you are familiar with kodi addon ecosystem, is basically unheard of. And even that one is related to my non-standard manual configuration that allows me to use WebDAV instead SMB or NFS. It’s using the wrong type of escaping for certain special characters, which is understandable, because who in their right mind uses WebDAV?

Kodi itself can act as a frontend for Jellyfin.

For those who did not read the entire thing, it’s a so called “filter” that converts the document before it’s sent to certain nasty types of printers. Except it’s not executed on the print server. The unauthenticated print server can just ask a client to run it on their side. And it’s designed to be able to execute ANY command.

Flirc cases are nice, but the rubber parts do not handle the high temperatures well.

One of my pis is running inside a cupboard, so not ideal in terms of ventilation. The rubbery top and bottom of the case has started to dissolve into a sticky oil that was a bitch to clean up. The plastic underneath looks OK, so once the rest of it dissolves it will look normal again.

The other pi with the same case that’s out in the open shows no signs of degradation.

One could argue the vests are like seat belts in a car. You don’t need them 99.9% of the time.

I host 2 ejabberd servers. One casual, federated, the other one standalone, for work.

• Conversations is a decent android client that supports modern XMPP standards
• Dino on the desktop. It just happen to support the same subset of standards as Conversations, so they work pretty well together.

For Mastodon, I’m using an Akkoma instance hosted by a frind of mine

• Tusky works pretty well with it. There were certain annoying bugs when I combined the official Mastodon app with Akkoma.

Every once in a while I try Matrix, but each time I try to log in, Synapse is is fucked in a different way. I have to scrap it up and start from the ground up some day.

I’m a big fan of Nostr, because of one particular feature - You control your identity without having to selfhost a server. The network seems to be occupied by the christian-carnivore-bitcoin-conservatives so far, therefor it’s pretty bland when it comes to content.

That’s not a slow laptop. I’ve been daily driving worse for years.

To protect the data from random thief just browsing through the files I still use ecryptfs. It only encrypts the home directory, and the keys are derived from my accounts password, so no extra hassle.

The encryption is weak by the current standards, and wouldn’t stop a determined attacker, but it’s 100% better than nothing, and I’ve never noticed any performance problems.

Pidgin was decent, but remember Miranda? The community around it was fantastic. The plugin system was an absolute blast. Not only there were plugins for any communication network you could think of, the UX was fully customizable.

At one point, somebody even bothered to implement the ICQ flash animations. There has not been anything like it ever since.
