No, it is completely misleading because:
this change will not impact a single developer outside the EU.
Any developer not using a third party app store will also not be affected.
You can still build free apps and literally nothing changes assuming you use Apple’s app store.
Like I said, it is a shit policy, but for nearly all developers nothing changes.
The video’s thumbnail said Apple is killing free apps. That is a complete lie. There is not an ounce of truth to it.
Nobody said this is a great policy. I was just pointing out the garbage level reporting of it by folks like the author.
In other words, if they actually didn’t care they would not have bothered to make a statement at all.
Keep in mind that Apple is a **competitor ** to netflix.
Such a clickbait-y headline I am not going to watch it.
Free apps aren’t changing in anyway.
The tl;dr is that for developers using the app store, nothing changes. Developers wishing to not use the app store have to agree to a new fee structure.
Apple, as expected, intends to make up for lost profits by charging more money.
If you are outside the EU none of this matters to you.
Note that I am not disagreeing with the sentiment , but rather I am disagreeing with the clickbait headline.
In the case of LPDDR5, we don’t have removable memory due to tight signaling requirements and the fact that the DIMM slots themselves take up too much space when populated.
LPCAMM2 solves this, so I hope it is widely adopted going forward because LPDDRR5 offers a huge upgrade over previous gen.
Yeah, but it is regular DDR5, which is less power efficient.
I do love Framework, however. They are at the top of my list when I eventually upgrade my laptop.
Hopefully they give us CAMM2 modules with LPDDR5 at that point.
Outside of DIY, end users don’t care. See: Apple.
Also, if you have a laptop with LPDDR5, it is soldered. If it has DDR5 or some variant of DDR4, it is likely also soldered as most OEMs did away with DIMM slots.
I don’t like or agree with the practice.
The walmart closest to me only had self checkout and got rid of ALL of their cashier lanes. They had 4 times ad many self checkouts. That lasted for a few months. It went from taking 5-10 minutes in checkout to 45 minutes or more. Why? Untrained people are slow and the software is terrible. In addition, Shoplifting went through the roof.
They finally added cashier lanes back in. No idea if it was complaints or dropping revenue that caused the reversal.
Uh, what about Pixelfed?
That was one of the reasons they killed the api: to support ad growth. Unfortunately they failed to realize the combination of ad-blocking browsers and users just quitting the site from losing client access means they were never going to hit pre-IPO revenue targets.
Had they instead focused on affordable API pricing and driving subscriber revenues up, they would have exceeded revenue targets.
source: I was in a somewhat similar position (not quite the same, no third party client), but chose different and found myself making more subscription revenue than ad revenue thanks to a viewer base more than happy to pay more.
Thanks! That is good to know. I will check it out. I was thinking of creating one that allows you to BYOC. I need something that is free, cross platform, auto saves, and can keep offline copies. All for just basic note taking.
No way in hell I am going to pay a ton of money to store a bunch of text. I don’t even need any of the advanced functionality, not even images, just a dumping ground for text notes I take on my phone.
I have not owned a phone with a headphone jack in a long time.
Knowing Microsoft? Subscription push or subject you to ads and/or other limitations. Windows 11 already does a ton of spying on you…
I use onedrive because you can get like 6TB of space included with Office for like $99/year. Second choice would be backblaze.
Out of curiosity, as someone thinking about starting a cloud/hosting provider, what features would make a huge difference to you beyond price? I do plan to have some pretty amazing pricing for individuals/small businesses, but beyond that….
I haven’t seen the alien.top stuff yet, but I had a friend that was working on a reddit bridge project that implements api over html for old reddit and new reddit. The idea was that you could target the api and make the client compatible with both reddit and lemmy. (The API is similar to Lemmy’s)
I got to play with it before he shelved it, and it worked great.
This seems like a better approach than the one they are trying to take.
Lemmy also needs a mechanism for linking your reddit user id (and twitter, and…) with your active lemmy id so users can find each other easier. I am surprised we don’t already have this with mastodon. Twiiter oauth is (used to be? I haven’t touched it in a couple years ) like a 5 minute thing to implement. Reddit apparently also supports oauth.
If you can sign into lemmy via a reddit login path, you could also do some other fun/interesting stuff.
Regardless, I don’t really see a need for any of it.
Lemmy has its own set of issues to deal with.
Our electric company charges 25% more for renewables.
My Apple TV has no ads.
How much is Comcast charging you compared to the fiber? If I were in that position I would have decided differently (assuming I owned the property) as the difference for me peaked at $150/mo. Even more if I chose a slightly cheaper plan…and I have AT%T fiber, not municipal.
If I had to watch ads, I would not use youtube. Period.
