Same here for the same reasons (although I started with FreeBSD 4.x) and have adapted to ZFS and Jails over the years.
The POLA (Principle Of Least Astonishment) when it comes to changes is awesome too.

Problem is I imagine a lot of their hardware is under NDA so they’re unable to. I appreciate what they’re trying to do but a lot of hardware companies sadly won’t allow them to publish a lot of things. I do wish there was more open-source hardware (and I say that as a huge open-source advocate)
This is my thing. I have about 122TB of spinning metal (with the same as an offsite backup) with SSDs as ZIL and L2ARC. And it’s awesome. HDDs I think will genuinely be important for for the foreseeable future.
I’m trying to remember this correctly, but traditionally /home is a symlink of /usr/home. I think that’s deprecated and you should now just have /home
A couple of years ago I ended up in the 1% because of one single thing I posted 2 weeks after I signed up purely to generate some rage because so many subs needed minimum karma… Can completely attest to this.
Yeah it’s true in Australia as well
I honestly think it’s the best OS they released. Shame so many games would throw a shitfit at the time because it reported it was Windows NT (rightfully so).
Yeah I remember IE5 and NS4, as well as the Firebird/Phoenix/Firefox naming joys back in the day.
If you want to blow your brains out, try getting XHTML 1.1 working in IE6. It is indeed possible if you modify the XHTML DTD. Interestingly it’d render shit so much better since it’d use MSXML instead of Trident as the rendering engine. Sadly it would add about 400k to the page since it needed to load a custom DTD…
Yeah it’s a pain in the arse. I 100% recommend Broadcom or Intel NICs for a router. I have a fileserver which has several Intel NICs and a single Realtek one and the latter is a PITA.
If you’re using any FreeBSD-based OS you should manually compile the realtek-re-kmod port. Make sure your kernel source is in sync with what you’re running.
Australia is the most expensive place in the world for cigarettes so… The latter. But they won’t ban it because it makes the govt. so much money.
